Maureen McNamara wrote an excellent article on The Inertia earlier this week titled, The Look Back. I particularly enjoyed the last paragraph, in which McNamara explains “…surfing is way, way more than just another sport. It’s more than a “lifestyle” or “art form” or any of that drippy crap that it’s sometimes described as. Surfers, and surfing, are not like any other people, or any other activity. When it gets into you, it grabs hold of you like nothing else you’ll ever experience.” Surfers have a notoriously difficult time providing an appropriate explanation for why riding waves is the driving force behind their lifestyle choices. However, McNamara’s article does a pretty good job of capturing the gripping magnetism that the ocean has over all surfers, no matter how far from the sea they may be.
